So you want to make a difference at work but not sure where to start, you need some direction, some guidance, clarification and comfort in knowing that you are doing the right thing.
Here is some information to help you choose your mentor:
M |
Manager or above – a mentor could be someone who is in a senior position, been there and done that and can share what they have learnt along the way |
E |
Experience - ensure their experience is aligned with your goals, what is their background, qualifications, career path |
N |
New ideas - your mentor should provide you with a fresh new perspective on your thinking and be able to give you feedback |
T |
Trustworthy – honesty goes with out saying, but ensure your mentor is someone you know you can share discussions in a confidential manner |
O |
Outcome - what do you want to gain from the mentoring relationship – how often will you meet up and where |
R |
Respecting each other is an important ingredient to the success of the relationship |
Preparation is key to the success of the mentor/mentee relationship. Think about having a notebook where you can note your goals, wins and learns of the week and share this when you catch up. It is a good way to see some true value developing from the partnership. Who knows, it could be you mentoring in the very near future!
Quote from Dr Seuss: “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go”
