There are so many career choices to make. How can you work out what you will be success at? The first step is all about understanding yourself. Knowing your personal profile, will help you to recognise your natural talents and define a career match.
Many of us are poor self observers. We just don’t see our blind spots, nor do we recognise what we are good at and feel passionate towards. This is why many of us feel held back or uninspired in our career.
What attracts you?
It’s well known that some people are attracted to jobs that are task and information focused. There is little need for people contact, the role is clearly defined and there are processes to follow. These jobs include accounting, finance, IT, research, engineering and scientific based roles. Then there are people who want a job with action, variety, lots of people contact and a chance to show off their organisational skills. Jobs such as marketing, journalism, sales, advertising, hospitality and social and community welfare will suit this personality style. In a nutshell, some people focus on information based jobs and others on people related jobs.
How fast are you going?
We can also distinguish between people who are action oriented, do things quickly, not interested in the details, big picture people who take risks, who can be aggressive and loud, and who like to tell others what to do. The opposite are people comfortable in doing things slower, correctly, cautious discerning types who are considerate, helpful, careful and risk averse.
So what kind of person are you and what jobs best match your style.
Be able to describe and understand yourself.
Understanding your profile will provide you with content you can use on your resume and in interview. How often are we asked: “Tell me about yourself?” Or “What are your strengths?” Using descriptive words and phrases contained in your profile report you can add value, be clearer in your communication and provide substance making you more attractive to an employer and more likely to successfully gain that perfect job!
